Overview of the Case Series

The Institute for the Advancement of Breastfeeding and Lactation Education's 'Clinical Case Discussions in Breastfeeding Medicine' is a monthly webinar series of 1-hour case presentations. The goal of this series is to enhance the clinical practice of breastfeeding medicine by bringing together physicians and other providers from around the world, in order to share experiences, evidence, and innovative ideas in clinical practice. This series is perfect for physicians and other providers who have been practicing breastfeeding medicine. Our case discussions are also beneficial learning experiences for non-provider lactation specialists. People with any amount of experience are welcome.

Registration

There is no charge for the webinar, but a donation of $5-$20 to our scholarship fund would be appreciated. Please "Add to Cart" at the bottom of this page to reserve your seat to attend live or access the recording. You can also choose to add a donation.

Recording

A recording of the webinar will be available for 2 weeks to those who have registered. Attendees can earn credits through any combination of live participation and/or viewing the recording.

Overview of the Clinician Teacher Series

The monthly Clinician Teacher in Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine Series aims to address strategies for starting and maintaining a Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine practice, pearls for patient management, and curriculum development and implementation for our learners.

Whether we work in large health systems, direct primary care, private group practice, telehealth, or Federally Qualified Health Centers, we all have innovations, ideas, advice, and questions to share regarding how we teach, practice medicine, and manage our Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine practices. Each month we will cover a different topic that pertains to our work such as items we stock, tools we use, how we bill, patient screening and triage, challenging clinical scenarios, curriculum development, and more.

Feel free to join us, whether you plan to sit back or join in on lively conversations.

• Explain how to assess for opportunities and a need for Breastfeeding Medicine support at your institution.
• Identify the institutional stakeholders necessary to create a Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic.
• Describe potential challenges and barriers in setting up an academic Breastfeeding Medicine practice.

About the Instructors

Heidi Szugye, DO, IBCLC, FAAP
Dr. Heidi Szugye is a board-certified pediatrician, board-certified pediatric hospitalist, and international board-certified lactation consultant. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Case Western Reserve University and her medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency training at Cleveland Clinic Children's. After her chief residency year, she worked at Cleveland Clinic Children's for 8 years as a pediatric hospitalist in various settings, including the main campus, Children's Rehab Hospital, Hillcrest, and Fairview, where she took care of patients admitted to general pediatric floors and newborn nurseries. In the spring of 2022, she founded and became the Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic Children's Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic, which has served over 1,000 patients to date. She has participated in a number of research and quality improvement initiatives surrounding breastfeeding, been featured in several media and news features discussing breastfeeding, and presented locally and regionally on the topic. She is passionate about trainee and patient education, teaches PBL, and is a physician advisor at Cleveland Clinic's Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, and going on bike rides or walks with her husband, twin 8-year-old daughters, and 3-year-old son.

Kam Lam MD, IBCLC, MPH, MS, FAAP
Dr. Kam Lam is the Assistant Medical Director of the Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric and chief residencies at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked as a pediatric hospitalist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s attending deliveries and seeing newborn dyads before transitioning to her current role. In her teaching roles, she created the virtual breastfeeding elective for medical students and is the founding faculty co-lead of the World Medicine Pathway at the medical school. She is passionate in the areas of medical education, global health education, and decreasing health disparities in our community. She’s received grant funding and support for breastfeeding research, including train-the-trainer breastfeeding workshops for Black doulas and cost analyses of mastitis care.

When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

CEUs: According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the continuing education hours approved by the AAFP and AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ meet the requirement of formally approved continuing education hours and may be used as such for ANCC Certification renewal.
